founder of Knoqly. Golden Door award winner for fiber sales and a Google Fiber G25 rep; sold fiber at the door for 17 providers and ran door-to-door programs for more than 30.

Those numbers depend on four things: how many doors you knock, how many households say yes, how many of those sales install, and the rate on each plan. This guide covers each one, plus the real timeline from sale to paycheck, chargebacks, blitz costs, and taxes.

How much do fiber sales reps make?

Here are the numbers behind a typical day for a fiber rep at Knoqly:

A typical day at Knoqly
Hours knocked6 to 8, usually noon to 8 p.m.
Doors knocked70 to 90
Conversations25 to 30
Sales2 to 3, and 5 to 7 or more for top reps
Sales that installAbout 80%
Average commission per installAbout $250

At those rates, a rep who sells three accounts a day for five days, with 80% installing, earns about $3,300 for the week. Rates are set per client and plan tier, and at Knoqly you see the rate for every plan in the app before you sell. The blitz earnings estimator runs the math at your own pace.

Across fiber programs, commission typically lands between $100 and $300 per account, often on top of a base wage at companies that employ their reps (Rework). Most door-to-door fiber reps are paid on commission alone.

From sale to paycheck: a real timeline

In fiber, commission is earned when the service activates, not when the customer signs. Here's how one sale moves through the system at Knoqly:

  1. October 1: you sign up a customer and schedule the install for five days later.
  2. October 6: the install is done and the service activates. The account is now commissionable.
  3. October 13: a week later, the account is invoiced to the provider.
  4. October 30: you're paid.

Most installs happen three to seven days after the sale, and most reps are paid two to four weeks after the install, on a weekly pay cycle. Holdbacks are minimal, so most of what you earn arrives up front. Sale, install, activation, and clearing the chargeback window are separate events across the industry, and in some programs they can be months apart (D2DHQ).

That's why the install rate matters as much as the close rate. A sale that never installs pays nothing, and a rep who signs someone into the wrong plan often watches that sale cancel before the technician arrives. The best fiber reps find out what each household actually uses the internet for and recommend the plan that fits, even when that means no sale.

How chargebacks work

A chargeback is commission taken back when a customer cancels after you've been paid. At Knoqly, an account that cancels for any reason within 90 days of activation is charged back. It doesn't happen often: out of every 100 installs, fewer than two typically become chargebacks, usually from non-payment or cancellation. If a customer does cancel, you get 24 hours to try to save the sale before our retention lead steps in.

Across the industry, companies handle chargebacks one of two ways:

  • Pay-then-clawback. You're paid once the install activates, and the commission is charged back if the customer cancels inside the window. This is how Knoqly works.
  • Hold-then-release. The company holds your commission for 30, 60, or 90 days and releases it once the window passes (D2DHQ).

Either can work. What matters is that the window is written down and you can see which of your accounts are still inside it.

Blitz math: a strong two weeks and a slower two weeks

On a blitz, a team travels to an area where fiber just went live and works it for two weeks or longer. Travel and housing usually come out of your pay, typically $800 to $1,200 for a two-week blitz. Here's how a strong blitz and a slower one have played out at Knoqly's numbers, each over 14 selling days:

Strong blitzSlower blitz
Selling days1414
Sales70 (5 a day)40 (about 3 a day)
Sales that install80%80%
Installs5632
Average commission$275$275
Total commission$15,400$8,800
One chargeback-$275-$275
Travel and housingAbout -$1,000About -$1,000
Take-home for the blitzAbout $14,100About $7,500

Even the slower blitz pays well when installs hold at 80%. What turns a blitz bad is usually the market: turf other reps have worked too hard, stiff competition, or a provider that isn't ready when you land. That's why it pays to ask before any blitz how many fresh doors the area has, when the fiber was built, who the competition is, and how long the blitz will run. At Knoqly, every blitz posting states its travel and housing terms before you sign up.

Blitz or planted: how the pay differs

Both pay per activated install. A blitz concentrates your earning into fresh turf, with travel costs on top. A planted market pays steadier weeks with no hotel bill, because you live in the market and work the same neighborhoods week after week. And the tortoise often out-earns the hare: a planted rep who sells consistently can finish the year ahead of one who chases every blitz. Blitz or planted on the jobs page explains how each works at Knoqly.

Your first days

New reps rarely hit their stride on day one. Most get the hang of the fiber sales process within a day or two, and the first strong day usually comes within the first week. Evan A., 19 and new to sales, sold one account on his first day and four on his second, worth more than $1,200 in commission. Results vary, and commission is paid on sales that install.

Contractor pay and taxes

In our experience, most fiber door-to-door reps are 1099 independent contractors, Knoqly's included, so no tax is withheld from your commission. Self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare is 15.3% on top of income tax (IRS), so set money aside from every check and plan for quarterly estimated payments (IRS).

Some companies hire reps as W-2 employees instead, which changes what's withheld and what benefits come with the role. Ask any company which model it uses before you start.

Team lead overrides

The path to team lead at Knoqly is to recruit, train, and lead from the front. Reps who consistently sell five or more accounts a day, with clean, high-quality sales, are the first we look at. Team leads earn an override on the installs their team produces, set in writing before it starts, and experienced reps who bring their own recruits can earn recruiting and management overrides.

What to ask before you sign anywhere

Pay speed tells you a lot about how a company runs: 67% of sales reps say they'd stay longer at a company that paid commission within 24 hours, and 41% report waiting 30 or more days for a check (Everee). Before you sign with any door-to-door fiber company, get answers to these:

  • What's the rate for each plan tier, and where can I see it before I sell?
  • How long from sale to install for this provider, and what's the typical install rate?
  • How fast do you pay after an install, and are there holdbacks or backend checks?
  • How long is the chargeback window, and what share of installs usually get charged back?
  • Do you work directly with the provider, or are you a sub-dealer?
  • Who pays for travel and housing on a blitz?
  • How many fresh doors are there, and when was the area last knocked?
  • Will I be a 1099 contractor or a W-2 employee?

Get the answers in writing. A company that pays reliably won't mind putting them on paper.

Frequently asked questions

How much do fiber sales reps make?

At Knoqly, $100 to $325 per activated install, averaging about $275. Most reps sell two or three accounts a day, which comes to about $3,300 for a five-day week with 80% of sales installing. On a strong two-week blitz, a rep can take home more than $14,000 after travel.

How soon do fiber door-to-door reps get paid?

At Knoqly, installs usually happen three to seven days after the sale, and reps are paid weekly, usually two to four weeks after the install.

Which door-to-door companies pay commission fastest?

Few companies publish it. Pay timing ranges from weekly to every two weeks, and some companies hold commission for 30 to 90 days before releasing it. Ask any company how long after an install you'll be paid, and get it in writing.

What is a chargeback in fiber sales?

It's commission taken back when a customer cancels within an agreed window after activation. At Knoqly the window is 90 days, and fewer than 2% of installs typically become chargebacks.

Do door-to-door sales reps get a salary?

Most door-to-door fiber reps don't. A door-to-door sales salary is rare in fiber: reps are paid commission on each activated install, which is why pay speed and chargeback terms matter so much. Some companies that employ reps as W-2 employees pay a base wage plus commission.

Do I get paid if the install never happens?

No. Fiber commission is earned at activation, so a sale that never installs doesn't pay.

Who pays for travel on a blitz?

It depends on the company. At Knoqly, travel and housing are on you unless the blitz posting says otherwise, and a two-week blitz typically costs $800 to $1,200.
